Te Hiringa o Te Reo

Te Hiringa o Te Reo is a language resource designed specifically for those who are wanting to learn basic Māori language by distance, in their own time and at their own pace.

What you will learn

A team of first-language speakers have put this resource pack together to provide a basic understanding of te reo Māori. The programme also includes a selection of well-known waiata and karakia. This language resource pack consists of recordings on a USB flash drive and a workbook that participants can work through at their own pace. Ākonga might take a month, or a year to complete the workbook, but it is recommended that least an hour a week is spent revising and working through the lessons.

This resource doesn't reward a certificate or qualification on completion. There are no exams or tests to complete, however participants can send their completed workbook back to be marked.

Entry requirements

  • Available to New Zealand and Australian citizens and New Zealand residents.
  • Students must provide verified Identification of either a Birth Certificate or Passport.
  • An interest in the Māori language and a commitment to learning.
