The research we do at Whitireia & WelTec helps us define ourselves as a leading tertiary institution in New Zealand.

What we do

Our faculty and staff do research in a wide range of areas. All of their work helps develop our communities and holds us accountable to teaching that is modern, relevant, and unique.

Our research strengths

Many of our faculty and staff have strong ties to industry and are working on projects for businesses and organisations. Our particular strengths are in engineering and technology in areas like testing and product development. We also conduct applied research in everything from creativity to construction. We’re committed to researching vocational education, with particular interest in how students learn best and new and innovative ways to train trades tutors.

Other research interests include:

  • teaching and learning

  • health and well-being

  • business and IT

  • the arts

  • Māori and Pacific cultural heritage

  • Māori language revitalisation.

We take part in the government's Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) evaluation, which allocates funding to tertiary institutions based on research quality. We continue to increase our ranking with each round.
