Ana is currently studying Business Management, Sales and Marketing. The course is just one year and she plans on graduating this November. Originally from Brazil, Ana arrived in Wellington May 2019, and has plans to stay after getting her qualification. She moved to Wellington specifically to study this programme with Whitireia & WelTec. Luckily, she already has family here and her sister did the same programme a few years ago.
Ana’s favourite part about studying at Whitireia & WelTec is meeting other foreigners. “It’s a great programme where I can apply everything I learn in class to real work. I love working with people from all over the world where we all share our own experiences and cultures.” For Ana, the programme is exceeding all of her expectations. “I’m learning more than I expected. I thought the programme would be more generic, but I can apply everything I’m learning in class to my actual workplace.” Ana works part time for her family’s conference centre in Silverstream. She started out working as a night porter and waitress, but after studying business, she’s been promoted. She wants to work full time at the conference centre after she graduates, hopefully in a manager role. Ana used her own networks to find her current role, but she admits that the work placements on the programme helped her gain the confidence and skills she needs to succeed. While she’d like to continue her studies someday, right now she just wants to get all the experience she can. Her dream is to be a manager in a large company someday, perhaps in hospitality or with animals.
Wellington is nothing like the Sao Paolo Ana grew up close to, but she came here 7 years ago and fell in love with the Kiwi way of life. She’s thrilled to have the opportunity to live and study here. “WelTec has been very supportive. In COVID lockdown, they called me regularly to make sure that I was fine. I don’t feel homesick here at all. I’m ready to stay here for a long time.”
