Construction Mixed Trades

You will have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills in the fields of Construction including Plumbing, Painting and Electrical trades.

This will include Health and Safety, workshop practice, the chance to work on projects and how to use hand tools safely.

Each Trade offers an insight into the techniques, range of work and both employment and further study opportunities.

You will also learn some beneficial communication skills, required to work within the Trades and how to present yourself for the industry.

Cost:  Free
Days: There will be two cohorts taught across either Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday.
Hours: 9.00am – 2.30pm (half hour lunch) 
Equipment: Protective clothing and safety equipment is provided if appropriate
Travel: This is provided free, subject to students meeting the MoE requirements 
Dates:  Tuesday 9 February – Tuesday 9 November 2021 (34 weeks) or Thursday 11 February – Friday 12 November 2021 (34 weeks), normal school holidays apply
Application:  Students must be enrolled in a secondary school in the Wellington region and be enrolled in the WTA by their secondary school 
Interview: Students may be requested to attend an interview with a family member or school representative 

 

Qualification

NCEA Level 2 with credit towards Vocational Pathway award

On successful completion of this course, students will have gained 51 credits

 

Learning Outcomes

A student successfully completing this strand will be able to:

  • perform basic residential plumbing maintenance
  • draw simple patterns for, and cut and join sheet metal for plumbing and gasfitting components
  • perform basic residential and painting and decorating
  • select and install flexible cords
  • read and interpret plans and specifications for construction projects
  • plan, construct, monitor and quality check a non-consent timber-framed utility building 
  • use tools and equipment safely, and follow health and safety procedures in a workshop and construction site

 

Assessment

Assessment is competency-based against unit standard outcomes and related evidence requirements.
They will follow the processes required by NZQA and relevant industry requirements as outlined by the relevant Industry Training Organisations.
