Studying is a time of growth and change, and it can be incredibly stressful. Whitireia & WelTec want to make sure that students here feel well-supported on their learning journey. Your wellbeing is about your whole person. This includes your physical health, your relationships with friends and family, and your emotional health.
Whitireia & WelTec offer a range of health and wellbeing services to make sure our students are taking good care of themselves by looking after their mental and physical health while they study.
If you hurt your body, you can get subsidised physio appointments at all Physio Spot clinics. They offer half price appointments to all students with a valid student ID card. Make sure to bring it with you
Keep your health costs lower by registering with your family doctor. Students can also get a Community Services Card which gives you better rates for healthcare services and even gym memberships. You can apply online at Work & Income.
The Health Navigator NZ website is a nonprofit community initiative that gives you reliable and trustworthy health information and self-care resources. Information is clear and consistent and is available in nearly 20 languages. It focuses on promoting clear, consistent messages that enable users to get the information they need at the time they need it. Health Navigator is supported by District Health Boards around New Zealand (including Capital & Coast DHB) and is available in nearly 20 languages.
You can also call Healthline for free on 0800 611 116 if you’re feeling unwell but you’re not sure if you need to see a doctor, or if you need some advice about what’s happening for you. Qualified nurses are available to talk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
All Whitireia & WelTec campuses are smoke-free. This means no one is allowed to smoke anywhere on campus, including car parks and green spaces.
We believe that by making our campuses smoke, alcohol, and drug-free, we’re committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

Our student counselling services for all students are provided by Vitae, a team of independent counsellors located throughout New Zealand. We can support you in accessing these services, or you can self-refer – students are entitled to three free sessions. This service is available in an emergency – you can ring them at any time of the day or night.
A Vitae counsellor can also be found once a week at each campus.

Piki is a free service for 18-25's that offers support for mental distress. Students (18-25) can self-refer through the Piki website.
Piki offers free access to:

an emotional wellness app that helps you access support and track your progress

trained peer support coaches.
A Piki mental health professional can also be found once a week at these campuses:
1737 is a free service for New Zealanders feeling down, anxious, a bit overwhelmed or just need to chat to a trained counsellor. You can call or text for free 24/7.
Free hearing clinic
A free hearing clinic is available every 4th Tuesday at Whitireia campus in Porirua.
Free Sanitary items are provided at all campuses
Get at least 7 hours of sleep. If you're tired, your worries can get blown out of proportion. A regular sleep routine can help you stay on top of university life.
Eat a healthy diet. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet can help you feel better and think clearly.
Exercise regularly. Keeping active can help you improve your mental health. Even light exercise like yoga or swimming can help you relax and manage stress.
Drink enough water. You want to drink at least 2L of water a day to stay hydrated and for mental clarity.
Try some mindfulness exercises. There is a lot of evidence to suggest these can be really helpful, especially for managing stress. Take a look at our mindfulness pages for more information.
Use a planner. This can help to keep track of deadlines and key commitments and help you organise your study and free time.
Take time out to relax. Getting away from your desk for a little while can help keep you calm.
Don’t overbook your time. Keep an eye on social commitments to avoid overloading your schedule around deadlines and exams.
Get online support and apps. There are lots of apps and websites available that can help you to manage your stress levels, such as those offering a daily meditation or mindfulness practice. Try Headspace to get started.
